Quick definition
A metal roof system with raised, interlocking seams between panels and hidden fasteners.
Standing seam roofs are the clean, vertical-ribbed metal roofs on many modern homes and commercial buildings. Their fasteners are hidden under the seams, which removes one of the most common leak points on a metal roof.
What is standing seam?
A standing seam roof is made of long metal panels that run from the eave to the ridge. Their edges rise into vertical seams that lock together. The panels are held down by clips or a fastening flange hidden under the seam, so no screws go through the face of the panel.
How do standing seam panels connect?
| Profile | How it joins | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Snap-lock | Seams snap together by hand | Faster to install; generally used on steeper slopes |
| Mechanical lock | Seams are folded with a seaming tool, in a single or double fold | Tighter, more weather-resistant seam; can suit lower slopes |
Minimum slopes are set by each panel manufacturer.
What is standing seam made of?
Most panels are coated steel (galvanized or Galvalume) or aluminum. Copper and zinc are used on premium projects. Steel and aluminum panels are usually finished with a factory paint coating, and light colors can reflect heat.
What are the pros and cons of standing seam?
Strengths
- Hidden fasteners mean fewer holes through the roof.
- Clips let panels expand and contract with temperature.
- Long service life with little maintenance.
- Sheds snow and rain well.
- Higher upfront cost than shingles or exposed-fastener metal.
- Oil canning, a visible waviness in the flat part of the panel, is usually cosmetic.
- Galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals touch.
- Many manufacturers require a specific underlayment, often a high-temperature type, under metal panels.
Standing seam vs exposed-fastener metal
Exposed-fastener panels are screwed through the panel face, and each screw has a rubber washer that ages over time. Standing seam hides its fasteners, which costs more but removes those leak points.
What it means for you
What Standing Seam means for homeowners
Standing seam costs more than shingles but can last much longer with little upkeep. Ask about panel material and thickness, the seam profile, the paint finish warranty and the underlayment.
